Rita Stockstill-O'Sullivan Scholarship
Rita Stockstill-O'Sullivan began her teaching career in 1980, sharing with children all across the Northshore and New Orleans. Rita said it best herself – "Theatre and young people are two of my strongest passions." This was evident in her long career as a teacher, director, and mentor. Most recently Rita was teaching in the St. Tammany Parish Talented Theatre Program. Rita not only worked many years in the school system, but also began her own ANGELS Academy of Drama in Slidell. Hundreds of children performed in "Ms. Rita's" productions. Many a student waiting in the wings to go on have heard Ms. Rita say "Take your first step forward. Find life in this moment. Don't be afraid." What a lesson for each of us.
In January 2008, our dear friend Rita Stockstill O'Sullivan passed, and we are instituting a new scholarship in her name to a theatre student in St. Tammany. The Voices Foundation provides a one-time scholarship reward of $500 to an eligible recipient. This annual reward is funded through donations made to the Rita Stockstill-O'Sullivan Fund as well as funds allocated by The Voices Foundation. In order to promote educational advancement and artistic public interest, this award will be given to a student who has shown continued public interest in the arts and is seeking attendance at a college or other educational institute. 2006 Recipient
Robbie Seibert and Cammie Nguyen were the winners of the first annual Milton Sand Scholarship.
Robbie Seibert, a Chalmette native and versatile performer, will attend SLU in Hammond this fall. Over his high school career, Seibert has immersed himself in a number of theatrical productions including stints as a leading actor and a technical director.
In fact, Seibert credits Milton Sand for teaching him theatrical lighting techniques, and was honored to be one of the first recipients of the Sand Scholarship.
“The Milton Sand Scholarship will mean a great deal to me, helping with my college expenses. I’m also excited about receiving the Scholarship because of Milton’s close relationship with Shine Productions and all the other performers that worked together to bring theater to St. Bernard.
Cammie Nguyen was the other recipient of the Sand Scholarship. Nguyen, a talented artist, said that the scholarship was great, but that she was really honored to be given a piece of Sand’s original artwork, a pen & ink drawing done by Sand in 1977, one of the few pieces of his artwork that could be salvaged after the flood.
“Being selected for this award was an honor. The beautiful artwork in remembrance of Mr. Sand means so much. I was surprised and honored at the awards ceremony to be chosen as the first recipient of the Milton Sand Scholarship. My dream of studying art in college will now be not only a dream, but a reality.”
